Creating and Making a Private Youtube Channel

HD video is difficult to share and transport.  File sizes can be in excess of 4-8 gigabytes, making transfers extremely difficult without having paid dropbox accounts, or access to blu-ray/flash that you want to snail mail.
One way around this is to use youtube's streaming service.  This allows you to...
1) Uploading a video to a public/private viewing audience.
2) Share the video with any prospective clients/colleagues without complicated systems
3) Embed the video in a website or blog, to share with a wide audience.
4) Gain instant internet fame and popularity, soarring to endless riches.*
To get started with this process, you will need to create a youtube account.

Create a Youtube Account

If you plan on sharing this account with other individuals in your lab, I recommend making a new gmail account, and linking the youtube account to that.  That way you don't expose your personal passwords or information to others.

Create a Channel

Once you have a channel created, you can begin uploading videos to it.  You can do this either directly, using youtubes built in uploader, or use a program such as imovie (OS X), or windows movie maker (Windows 7) to convert and upload your AVCHD videos.
After uploading the video, make sure it's set to private (unless you want everyone in the world to be able to see it).  Then you can share it with up to 50 individuals by emailing them a direct link.

At any later time you can make the video public, if you want others to have access to it as well.
The process may seem daunting at first, but once you go through all the steps once, it's very efficent and easy to move more and more videos online.  It's literarly just a few clicks in Windows movie maker!

Google Maps goes indoors By Slashgear.com



Though the final frontier may be space, and according to some the ocean of water that surrounds us here on Earth, Google has decided that it’s inside buildings – and that’s exactly where it’s going with it all-encompassing Google Maps environment. You’ll be able to work indoors with Google Maps 6.0 for Android, for example, using “My Location”, which will soon show you as a blue dot on a map of the location you’re at, including both outdoor AND indoors. No longer will you have to act as a car to get to where you need to be should you simply have a pair of shoes. Nothing but fun ahead!
Google Maps new indoor features will help you get around two of the most labyrinthian locations in your everyday life: airports and malls. One of the first malls to be mapped will be one of the largest in the world, the one not 20 minutes away from your humble narrator’s abode: the Mall of America. You can back out and see the whole mall, or move in close to see your nearby surroundings including current stores, exits, and most importantly, bathrooms. You can choose which floor your own, where you want to go, and switch over to your car with only a couple of taps should you want to head to the nearby IKEA across the street.
You can take a peek at a couple of demonstration videos here, first on the airport feature, then one on the rest of the Google Maps Indoors push as a whole – enjoy the animations! The first locations to participate are first the Mall of America along with several chains like IKEA, Home Depot, a handful of Daimaru, Taskashimaya, and Mitsukoshi stores, and select Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s locations. As far as airports go, currently you’ll be able to explore Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), Chicago O’Hare (ORD), San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Narita International (NRT). We’re hoping for Minneapolis International Airport (MSP) to come on soon since the Mall of America is literally 10 minutes away – how about the full experience, Google?

There’s nothing we love more than Google getting on every street, every city, every business, and someday every home! Map the entire planet!

Look Up: Wolfram Alpha Can Identify That Airplane


Wolfram Alpha, the company whose scientists are responsible for the smarts behind that sometimes-sarcasticSiri assistant on the iPhone 4S, has figured out a way to give you an abundance of information about any plane you see flying overhead.
For some reason, every time I see a plane go by, I’m immediately wondering what type of aircraft it is, where it’s coming from, where it’s going, what airline it belongs to and how high it’s flying at the moment. Now, Wolfram Alpha can satisfy my curiosity in real time, letting me look it up on the Wolfram Alpha Computational Knowledge Engine.
Where is that located, you say? In some sheltered lab deep underground within a defense department bunker? Heck no, it’s a lot more accessible than that — just enter the search term “flights overhead” at WolframAlpha.com on any computer or smartphone’s browser, and you’ll see results like this:
As you can see in the graphic above, you’ll get a list of the airliners overheadand what type of aircraft they are, and there’s a sky map that even tells you where to look for them.
When you spot a plane, you can click on that flight and drill down to even more info, showing you everything you’d want to know about the flight short of who the passengers are and what they’re talking about at the moment. You’ll see where it came from and where it’s going, its flight duration, a full map of its flight path, how long it’s been in the air and a lot more.
Tip: While you can look up this data using a smartphone, when we tested it on iPhones and Android phones, that handy Sky Map didn’t show up. But you can still tell where to look for planes by using the “Angle” information provided by Wolfram Alpha.
By the way, there’s no need to spend the $2.99 for the Wolfram Alpha app on the iPhone or $1.49 for the Android version to get this data — even though both of are useful apps, you can get the “flights overhead” info on a standard browser on most computing devices.

Siri, Are You Stealing Searchers from Google?

Is Siri poaching Internet searchers from Google? That's what The Arora Report's Nigam Arora suggested Monday, citing a "small study" he conducted to "validate the hypothesis that users of Apple's Siri are reducing Google searches."
When Arora says "small," he means it. The unscientific survey of 40 Siri users is anything but conclusive, but there's certainly a lot to chew on—not the least of which is the notion that with Siri on the new iPhone 4S, Apple may just have inserted itself into the search game with an end-around that few people saw coming.
Twenty-seven of the Siri users Arora polled said they hadn't done a single Google search since buying their iPhone 4S. The remaining 13 had conducted two Google searches on average since welcoming Siri into their lives. And "[a]ll 40 users of Siri report that they see no need to go to Google if Siri can answer their question."
Arora's informal study offers some perspective for Google chairman Eric Schmidt's recent claim before Congress that his company is not "overwhelmingly dominant" in search. Schmidt contended that Google faces a number of serious search competitors and even singled out Siri as a "significant development" in the search arena.
"Google has many strong competitors and we sometimes fail to anticipate the competitive threat posed by new methods of accessing information," Schmidt said, referring to new search tools like Apple's popular new voice-recognition platform, which bypasses Google for things like restaurant searches.
Earlier this year, Schmidt designated Google, Apple, Amazon, and Facebook as the "Big Four" of consumer technology, each with their own particular strengths. Now one of those four, Apple suddenly looks like it's discovered a way to begin taking on Google in the area that company has dominated for so long: search.
Arora goes even further and says his sources maintain that "Google has been blindsided by Siri."
"A small study at The Arora Report, if validated with larger studies, is a cause of panic for Google," he writes. "Apple does not generate revenues from Siri. Siri simply helps Apple to sell more phones. The point is that the business model of Apple is to make money by selling phones."
"The business model of Google is to make money from advertisements on search results. There is no question that Google is probably hard at work to counter Siri. However, the business model of Google may get in the way. How does Google generate revenues that are given verbally? I cannot imagine Google requiring a person to hear an advertisement before receiving the search results," he continued. "Every answer that Siri provides using Wikipedia, Yelp, or Wolfram Alpha is business taken away from Google."
