Think Elvis, for example. Or lefty sinkerballer Tommy John of the eponymous surgery. Or, for that matter, Grover Cleveland, whose two acts as US president were separated by a four-year intermission.
In the business world, however, second acts are rare. In the corporate rat race, if you slip in Act I, you're trampled by your fellow rodents – there's no "Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow" on that unforgiving stage.
Except for Steve Jobs.

'Flying carpet' of conductive plastic takes flight

Two frequencies of cycling show the sheet "rippling" in a display of small propulsive force

A miniature magic carpet made of plastic has taken flight in a laboratory at Princeton University.

 The 10cm (4in) sheet of smart transparency is driven by "ripple power"; waves of electrical current driving thin pockets of air from front to rear underneath. The prototype, described in Applied Physics Letters, moves at speeds of about a centimetre per second.

Army’s New Bomb-Squad Recruit: Knight Rider’s Robotic Car

The military’s tried nearly everything to stop insurgent bombs. It’s tried jamming their detonation signals. It’s tried scouring roads for them with metal detectors like beach bums searching for treasure. And it’s tried — lots of times — to put robots in the way of the boom. No dice: the bombs keep proliferating, largely because of how cheap they are to construct.

So it was only a matter of time, perhaps, before someone thought to put KITT on the job.

The Army’s latest scheme to stop homemade bombs is pretty much inspired by Knight Rider. A California company called 5D Robotics recently won a contract of unspecified amount to develop an interface with an “intelligent” unmanned car that will “effectively perform improvised explosive device defeat (IEDD) tasks remotely.”
